Digging Deep. Delivering Excellence.
Mitchell Construction Co. LLC works mountain ground every day. Not flat farmland. Steep slope land clearing in Western NC is its own trade, and we treat it that way.
Asheville lots hide problems you can’t see from the road. Shallow topsoil sits over granite bedrock. Under that, dense red clay holds water and lets it run. Cut the wrong line on a high-incline lot and you lose topsoil in the first hard rain. Worse, you risk slope failure or a stop-work order from Buncombe County.
We plan for that before the first machine comes off the trailer. Our crews run tracked equipment built for grade. We know the narrow access roads off I-26, I-40, and US-19/23, and how to get a mulcher onto a lot a standard dozer can’t reach. Forestry mulching in Asheville, NC is our default on steep ground, not an upsell.
Mitchell Construction works across Buncombe County — West Asheville, North Asheville, Fairview, and Black Mountain — plus neighboring Henderson County.

Efficiency on a mountain lot comes from sequence. Mitchell Construction follows the same four steps on every job.
First, terrain and drainage assessment. We map slope gradient, bedrock depth, and the natural runoff channels already cutting your property. That tells us where machines can safely work and where water wants to go.
Second, low-impact mulching and brush removal. Tracked mulchers grind underbrush and small trees in place while leaving root systems intact. Those roots are what hold a hillside together.
Third, tree felling and boulder excavation. Mature hardwoods come down in controlled directions. Granite outcroppings get worked around or removed, depending on your build plan.
Fourth, erosion control and site stabilization. Silt fencing, straw matting, and seeding go in before we pull off site, so red clay stays put through the next downpour.
Mitchell Construction also handles the paperwork. Buncombe County land disturbance permit requirements, stream buffer setbacks, and hillside standards get sorted before we break ground, not after an inspector shows up.
One crew. One schedule. Mountain lot preparation and grading, underbrush clearing, and fire mitigation in Asheville handled start to finish.
A homeowner needed a build-ready pad on a steep wooded lot with one narrow access drive off I-40. We mulched two acres of underbrush in place, felled mature hardwoods inside the pad footprint, and cut a graded drive at a workable slope. Silt fencing and straw matting went in before the next storm cycle. Permit filed and closed with Buncombe County.
An owner off the I-26 corridor wanted defensible space around the house and a clear view line without clear-cutting the ridge. We mulched heavy underbrush across six acres, thinned small-diameter growth, and left the mature canopy and root structure intact. No haul-off trucks, no burn permit, no torn-up hillside. The mulch layer now protects the slope through heavy rain.

Often, yes. Land-disturbing work in designated hillside subdivisions can require a permit at roughly a quarter acre, and thresholds vary by location. We confirm current requirements with Buncombe County and file on your behalf.
Mulching usually costs less overall on steep ground. There’s no hauling, burning, or stump disposal, and one machine does the work of several. Traditional clearing wins only when you need bare soil for immediate excavation.
We mulch in place and leave root mats intact, work across the slope instead of straight up it, and set silt fencing and straw matting before we leave. Roots plus mulch cover hold the clay.
Usually. Our tracked mulchers are sized for tight switchback drives and steep grades common off US-19/23. We walk the access route during your free evaluation and tell you straight if a smaller machine is needed.
Yes. Work near streams and watersheds carries buffer and setback rules. We flag those lines before clearing, keep machines out of them, and document compliance so your project avoids fines or a shutdown order.
